MMC 9/27/15

Hello everybody! Once again I will be participating in the Monday Minute Challenge! I hope you all enjoy my short story and have a lovely day. :)

My palms started to sweat as I dialed his number at the phone booth, praying that the number he gave me was right. The phone rang, once, twice.

“Hello.” A raspy voice said over the phone. I froze a moment.

“I..I uh..Is Gabriel there?” I managed to ask.

The voice started to say something else, then paused and said, “One moment please.”

I sighed. Feeling relieved that I hadn’t called the wrong number. I could hear the man’s echoing footsteps through the receiver. My heart pounded to the rhythm of it. Thump, thump, thump.

A familiar voice came on the phone.

“Angela, is that you?”

“Yes, it’s me Gabriel!” I said through happy tears. It was so good to hear my brother’s voice. It had changed since the last time we had talked, but it was still his.

I could just imagine his smile in my mind as he said, “I am so glad you called.” Then he said in a more hushed voice. “Meet me at the bus station on Thursday.”

“Does this mean…” I began to ask.

“Yes. It does!” he answered. “We are going to run away on Thursday the….” He paused, he was probably looking at the calendar I gave him the last time we meet. “The 28th.” He finished.

“Oh that’s wonderful Gabriel!” I said excitedly. Then suddenly I heard a scream, a loud thump and then the sound of the phone being hung up.
